One task, one goal: how to brief so it lands

Remember the dice from the first tip: every task is a roll, and even an excellent model doesn't land every one. Now the important part: when you pack five goals into a single brief, five rolls have to land right at once. Even with a model that lands 95 out of 100, such a bundle comes out right first time only about three times in four. And when it doesn't, the worst part begins: you can't see which of the five goals failed, or where.

Split the goal into steps

So break a big brief into smaller tasks, and check the result after each one. You can do it yourself, or the AI can (see the first tip). Only then move to the next step.

Instead of “build me a website for my business”, brief step by step: first “propose the page structure”, you review it, adjust. Then “write the homepage copy”, you read it, tune the tone. Then the design, then the contact page… Each step has one goal and can be judged at a glance.

It sounds slower, but it's faster. A mistake in a small step takes a minute to fix. A mistake buried somewhere in a huge delivery takes an hour to find. And meanwhile five more things were often built on top of it, and they fall with it.

How to recognise a good step

A well-briefed task has two parts: what should exist and how you'll know it's done. The second part is worth saying out loud: “done means the form can be submitted and a confirmation arrives”. A verifiable goal is also exactly what AI needs to check itself. And the circle from the first tip closes.

Not sure how to split a big goal? Hand that to AI too: “split this project into steps that can be checked one by one”. Planning is a task as well, and one of the easier ones.

Remember

  • Five goals in one brief = five dice rolls that must land at once.
  • Split the goal into single-purpose steps. Check after each one, then move on.
  • For every step, say how you'll know it's done. Then AI can check itself.
